The plot in "Monsters" is similar to other alien movies; Aliens invade Earth, the humans get freaked, the aliens repopulate and take over the border between America and Mexico. Then, the humans are left to defend themselves against the aliens when they approach the "infected areas" close to the border.
The problem is, the movie never really gets off the ground when it comes to plot, suspense or thrill in association with the aliens.
Andrew Kaulder, played by Scoot McNairy, is an American photojournalist trying to make a quick buck by going down to the border towns in both America and Mexico in an attempt to get some action shots of the aliens. Sadly, the aliens aren't anything special: they look like 50-foot tall octopuses, plain and simple.
While there, Kaulder receives a call from his boss at the magazine. He boss says he cares less about the photos Kaulder takes and more about Kaulder saving his daughter, who's been off in Mexico for the past several months.
Viewers come to learn that she's engaged to be married and unsure if that's really what she wants to do, so she chose to hide out in the foreign country.
Whitney Able plays Samantha Wynden, the spitfire daughter. Kaulder and Wynden have a budding love connection that flows throughout the rest of the film. But, at times, this connection feels a bit forced.
Capitalizing on the fact that there are people constantly wanting to cross the "infected zone" at the border, the Mexican government sees it fit to charge $5,000 to take a ferry up the Gulf. Kaulder forks over the cash, but in the process loses Wynden's passport.
This forces the two to travel by foot through the border, which is the riskiest way to do it.
Perhaps the best part of the movie is when the two are in a river boat with some Mexican guides, and they encounter one of the aliens. It's dark, the music is eerie and viewers aren't sure what's going to happen.
This is director Gareth Edwards' first feature film; he's done television shows prior to this. And this is where he falters: he can't develop the plot enough to last for an hour-and-a-half movie, which was a bummer, because there's nothing like a good science-fiction film to usher in Halloween well.
